Kyriakos Papaioannou
Civil Engineer, PhD, Professor Emeritus, AUTh
He graduated from the Experimental High School of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (A.U.Th.).
He completed his doctoral dissertation as a research assistant at the Department of Civil Engineering of A.U.Th., on the topic “Fire Protection in the Greek Industrial Building” (1979–1984), and was awarded a PhD by the same department. During this period, he was hosted twice (1980 and 1984 sabbaticals) as a researcher at the then worldrenowned Fire Research Station in Borehamwood, United Kingdom.
From 1984 onward, he taught the course of Building Construction, as well as the elective courses “Fire Protection of Structures” and “Special Topics in Building Construction” at the Department of Civil Engineering of A.U.Th. He also taught Building Construction for three years at the Department of Civil Engineering of the University of Thessaly, as well as Fire Protection of Structures at the School of Architecture of A.U.Th.
In 1994 he was elected Associate Professor, and in 1998 Full Professor in the same academic field. He retired on September 1st, 2009.
He gained international experience through lectures and conferences of varying duration in the USA, Canada, Japan, Denmark, Germany, Brazil, Poland, France, and China. He travelled and participated in scientific events at universities and research centers in many other countries as well.
Throughout his academic career, he served—and in some cases continues to serve—as a member of the following international organizations, committees, and associations:

He is well known in Greece and abroad, primarily as an expert (EU Expert: E 13278 H) in Fire Protection.
He was the head of the drafting committee for the first Greek Fire Protection Regulation for Buildings, which has been in force since 1987. He also served as coordinator of the Technical Chamber of Greece (TEE) working group responsible for the revision plan of this Regulation.
He has an extensive scientific publication record (four academic textbooks and a large number of papers in reputable Greek and international journals) and has participated in numerous scientific activities (conferences, lectures, seminars, etc.).
He has organized major international conferences and meetings in Greece and has published four volumes of proceedings.
He also has substantial research activity both in Greece and internationally. As scientific coordinator for A.U.Th., he led major European research programs such as:

● Fire-Tech (Fire Protection of European Cultural Heritage)
● Fire-Risk (Fire Risk Assessment in Steel Structures)
and others.
He introduced into his teaching the subjects of Property Valuation, Safety and Health, Environmental Issues, and Conservation of Cultural Heritage.
He also taught, as Professor Emeritus, in two postgraduate programs of the Department of Civil Engineering and the Interdepartmental Program of the Faculty of Engineering, offering the courses:
- Safety and Health in Construction Projects
● Fire Protection of Historic Buildings
